The Clean Diesel Option

According to the EPA, "reducing emissions from diesel burning engines is one of the most important air quality challenges facing the country today". Although newer and more stringent standards and regulations are in place, millions of diesel burning engines will continue to emit nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and other toxins which are not only hazardous to the health of the public, but also to the health of the environment. Fortunately, under the Environmental Protection Act of 2005, Congress has appropriated funds for the 2008 fiscal year to provide for a National Clean Diesel Campaign directed by the EPA. Companies such as Volkswagen, with their Jetta TDI Clean Diesel and Jetta Sportwagen TDI Clean Diesel, are taking advantage of this new technology. Other companies have expressed interest in developing a clean diesel engine, namely Isuzu and Toyota, although development has been temporarily shelved for a later date. The next time you go out to purchase a car, just be sure to consider the options that will positively contribute to your environment, including vehicles powered by electricity, natural gas, hybrid models, and now, clean diesel.
